What Is Deionization?
Water is just water, right? Well, not exactly. There are actually many different types of water and each type can have a very different effect on your body and your home. Deionized water is a special type of water used for specific purposes. It is important to properly understand if you need access to this type of water and how to get access if you do. Let’s learn more about deionized water.
What Is Deionization?
Deionization is a process in which almost all of the dissolved ion and mineral content is carefully removed. Deionized water is often considered some of the purest water on earth. This is one of the reasons why it is often used for medical, pharmaceutical, and laboratory purposes. There are other uses as well. Keep reading to learn more about this type of water and its benefits.
How Is Water Deionized?
During the deionizing process, ions are removed. Ions can include minerals and salts. This can be accomplished through a process called ion exchange. Let’s look more closely at exactly what ions are. Ions are atoms that are electrically charged. This charge can either be positive or negative. Different types of particles will have different types of charges.
In order to deionize water, water will flow through a bed of resin beads. These beads will have a positive or negative charge. The positively charged beads will trap negative anions while the negatively charged beads will trap positive cations. After this, the resin will release hydrogen ions. When the process is through, you will have pure deionized water. This type of water is sometimes referred to as DI water.
What Can This Process Remove?
This process can be very helpful if you need to remove specific particles from water that is heavy with that mineral. Here are some of the ions that can be removed through this process.
- Calcium
- Sodium
- Iron
- Magnesium
- Chloride
- Sulfates
- Others
Understanding Deionized Water Systems
A deionization water system is a system of tanks that will deionize water. In this system, the water will flow through the resin bed where resin beads will pull particles out of the water. The pure water will then be collected in another tank.
What Is Commercial Deionization?
Pure water of this type is often used commercially. This makes it necessary for commercial deionization tanks to work on large amounts of water so that the pure water is available in large quantities for use. It can be used for:
- Pharmacies
- Medicine
- Lab tests
- Engine cooling
- Food processing
- Cleaning products
