What Is Deionization?
We all need access to clean water, but what do you do when you need water that is more than clean? What if you need water that is pure? Some industries and businesses need water that is free of contaminants, but pure water can’t be found. Pure water can be made, however, using the process of deionization.
What is deionization?
The majority of non-particulate impurities found in water are dissolved minerals and salts. Even clean water still contains these impurities. Deionization is a water filtration process that uses ion exchange to remove these non-particulate impurities. It is water purification on a molecular level. Deionization is fast, cost-effective and less energy-intensive compared to other water purification processes, which makes it ideal for industries that require large quantities of purified water on demand for everyday operation. Deionized water in Cincinnati, OH is used across industries, as seen below.
How does deionization work?
Deionization uses positive and negative charges to remove impurities from water, the same way a positively-charged magnet attracts a negatively-charged magnet. Cationic resins are negatively charged sulfonic acid groups. These negatively-charged resins attract the positively-charged ions in the water, such as sodium, calcium and magnesium. Anionic resins are positively-charged ammonium groups. These positively-charged resins attract the negatively charge ions in the water, such as sulfate, fluoride and chloride.
During this process, the cationic resins are also releasing hydrogen (H+) into the water, and the anionic resins are releasing hydroxide (OH-). Together, hydrogen and hydroxide form H2O, or water. In other words, deionization simultaneously removes impurities from water and replaces them with pure water molecules.
How long does deionization last?
Over time, the positive and negative resins used to remove contaminants from water can become replaced by the positive and negative contaminants in the water. In other words, the resins used in deionization can become worn out or exhausted. How quickly this occurs varies. It depends on the quality of the water supply and deionization system configuration.
Who needs deionized water in Cincinnati, OH?
While certain minerals in tap water are fine in most cases, there are certain industries that require more than just “clean” water. They need pure water to ensure quality and safety. Here are some of the industries that benefit from the use of deionized water in Cincinnati, OH:
- Car washes
- Dental offices
- Dialysis treatment facilities
- Surgical preparation facilities
If you need water that is pure for your business, then you need deionized water. Deionized water not only ensures quality and safety, but it saves you time and money. Deionization is a cost-effective solution for businesses that need water that is cleaner than clean.
