What is deionization?

The majority of non-particulate impurities found in water are dissolved minerals and salts. Even clean water still contains these impurities. How does deionization work?

Deionization uses positive and negative charges to remove impurities from water, the same way a positively-charged magnet attracts a negatively-charged magnet. Cationic resins are negatively charged sulfonic acid groups. These negatively-charged resins attract the positively-charged ions in the water, such as sodium, calcium and magnesium. Anionic resins are positively-charged ammonium groups. These positively-charged resins attract the negatively charge ions in the water, such as sulfate, fluoride and chloride.

During this process, the cationic resins are also releasing hydrogen (H+) into the water, and the anionic resins are releasing hydroxide (OH-). Together, hydrogen and hydroxide form H2O, or water. In other words, deionization simultaneously removes impurities from water and replaces them with pure water molecules.

How long does deionization last?

Over time, the positive and negative resins used to remove contaminants from water can become replaced by the positive and negative contaminants in the water. In other words, the resins used in deionization can become worn out or exhausted. How quickly this occurs varies. It depends on the quality of the water supply and deionization system configuration.
